how important is this debate and do you think we'll be waking up on thursday morning as chris christie said with a completely different campaign? >> i think all the debates are important but particularly this one because it's on domestic policy which is the critical issue in the race and the first times that americans will get to see mitt romney and barack obama side by side. not only hear their words and assess their styles and their candor, but also get to hear the ideas. i think that's what this whole race comes down to, is the record. i would say the failed record of barack obama on jobs, on gas prices, on debt management, on energy and compare that to the vision and the ideas for the future that mitt romney has. it's very important. the last couple weeks there's been a little bit of a movement for the president. but listen, speeches don't create jobs. rhetoric doesn't create jobs. good ideas do. and the president, despite his efforts, has failed to help the american people get back to work and i think mitt romney has better ideas. that's what this debate will be about. >> business

. >> you know, on the subject of winning and losing, chris christie, big supporter of mitt romney, has come out and said he expects a big win for governor romney in this debate. we talked to brad woodhouse yesterday from the democratic side. this is what he said about christie's comments. >> i think he set the bar high for mitt romney, and the bar should be high for mitt romney. i mean, he's gone through this campaign. we're five weeks out, soledad, and he's not said how he'd pay for his tax plan. we're five weeks out, he hasn't said how he'll shore up medicare or social security. to protect benefits instead of cutting them. the bar is really high for him. i think chris christie set it even a little higher. >> so, sean, how high is the bar for governor romney? >> i see the folks from the obama campaign have talked down the expectations from the president so many days in a row, that today i expect them to come out and say that the president's got a fear of public speaking. i mean, these guys keep talking it down like, you know, it's going to be a blow-away. the fact is the president is

but chris christie didn't get the memo that you're supposed to downplay expectations. yesterday he said his first debate was going to be a game changer. >> well, i don't think it really matters. people are making a little bit of a big deal about what he said. i think what matters is governor romney needs to close the gap on what i call the tug mcgraw principle, which is you've got to believe. he needs republicans and the press and independent voters to believe he can win. a lot of new polls out this morning. they all show, when this question's asked, people don't think romney's going to win, even a lot of people who support him think the president's going to win. i think that's one of the main things, stand with the president and convince people yeah, he's got a chance. >> you hear more and more people talking about the first debate being critical and it is with all the early voting going on, with the advantage that the president's taking in a lot of swing states, even fox news polls showing him ahead. with all the early voting going on, with the spread being what it i
